Invitations - The Mock-Up

Posted by: Dan on Dec 10, 2007

Since Brooke and I plan on making our wedding invitation I decided that tonight I should mock them up, make a template online and just get a feel for how difficult the project may be.

Before I go on I found the idea for the invitations online – I don’t know if I want to post a link to the site though. I kind of want the invites to be a surprise, but that may change.

Anyway I sat down with some paper, pencil, rulers (yes I needed more than one), double sided tape, a sharp knife, and my graphing calculator.

Graphing calculator? Yeah… I know that one inch equals 25.4 millimeters but for quick and accurate measurements I wanted the calculator right there. (Why the conversions of units? Looking back I’m sure I had a reason – but can’t think of why. Possibly due to the program I was planning on using to layout the template.)

I went on a tangent there…. where was I? Oh yeah the invitations. The first mock-up went pretty well until I assembled it. I put the double sided tape in the right spot but folded it wrong. So that version ended up in the trash.

We do learn from our mistakes because the second mock-up went together pretty quickly and turned out decent. I think if I weren’t using plain, white, printer paper it would have been excellent.

With the mock-up done I jumped on the computer and proceeded to fire up a very handy (and free) page layout program called Scribus. It was a snap to make a quick layout and if anything changes it’ll be just as easy to make the adjustments. When all is said an done printing out the page will make assembly so much easier.

I’m looking forward to this… I just hope it all turns out OK.
