Apartment Hunting (Round 1)

Posted by: Dan on Mar 30, 2008

During this past week Brooke called a few apartment places to set up some times we could go and view them. After all we’re going to need a place to live and either of our places are out of the question. It’s not that they aren’t decent but… okay they aren’t decent. The may look nice but the management sucks. Plus as a married couple we’d like to move into “our own place” rather than having one of us just “move into the other’s place”.

We looked at two places today and let me just say they were interesting for two very different reasons.

The first place we looked at was West Grove on the Lake – I won’t link to the place because I just didn’t care for the was things went down. When we arrived there we just didn’t have the “this could be our future home” feel. We went into the office only to find out they didn’t even know we were coming that day. Someone else made the appointment but never told the people that were going to be there.

The first apartment we looked at (at West Grove) wasn’t even the one we wanted. It was a two bedroom place but it was the smallest two bedroom apartment they had. We mention this to the guy – who by the way, while a nice fellow, decided to tell us his life story along the way. We tan back the office and he pretty much told us they have one apartment they could show us but they couple hadn’t moved out yet – but it was okay since they had posted a notice for the tenants saying they would be showing the apartment between 11AM and 1PM. When he said that I noticed it was already 1:30PM.

The second apartment was larger and the one we looked at online. But it just felt creepy to be in someone’s apartment when they weren’t there. It was pretty nice and, in my opinion, something I would consider under different circumstances. The main issue Brooke and I had with West Grove was the location. It was a bit out of the way and wasn’t great for either of us to get to work in the morning.

After we finished up there we went to look at Wildflower Place which is pretty much right across the street from my current apartment.

We were told to meet Ruth in the parking lot by some black SUV. The problem was there were a number of black SUVs in the parking lot. We sat there for maybe 20 minutes before we got in touch with Ruth who was inside waiting for us. When we went in she mentioned that she has some other people coming and we’d do a joint showing for the apartments.

The other people coming were two guys in their mid-twenties, a bit obnoxious and, as Brooke pointed out, were flirting with Ruth. The whole tour could have lasted 15 minutes if we didn’t have those two guys along. Kind of frustrating.

Anyway, we looked at two places in the Wildflower Place apartment building and overall they were nice. They were on the top of our list (not hard to do when you’ve only looked at two different places).

We have another place to look at on Sunday so we’ll see how that goes.
