It's Shaker Baker... And I Helped!

Okay a little play on words there from the old “Shake and Bake” commercials. I couldn’t resist.
Well today Brooke and I went for our first (and only) wedding cake testing. We hit Shaker Baker in Brookfield and it turned out to be anything other than what I expected.
We walked in and were pretty much told to sit at this little table in the corner. No problem there. The lady brought out 5 or 6 different cake pieces and some toppings (really they were fillings) – oh she also gave us two photo albums of cakes to look at. Then… she left. We were pretty much left on our own to taste the cakes and look at the pictures.
We didn’t need the cake pictures since we know how we want the cake to look. However, for the rest of the process, it would have been nice to have someone there to answer our questions as they came up. We did get the questions answered but a bit later after we sat there a while.
I think this was the first place we went where we didn’t have a list of questions to ask. Most likely because we knew how we wanted the cake to look. And really, how many cake questions can there be?
Okay don’t answer that because I’m sure there are a ton.
The toughest choice, that I didn’t see coming, was which cakes to go for each layer. Do you base that on what you like or what you think most of your guests would like? Because personally I loved the banana cake but I’m not sure if that would go over well so we left it out. Plus all the cakes tasted good so it wouldn’t matter to me which we went with in the end.
We put down the $50 down payment tonight so we’ll have ourselves a cake come June 28, 2008. Now we just need to get a few things together to pass along to the cake people and it’s all good.
