Invitations - Assembly: Phase 4, 5 and 6

Posted by: Dan on Apr 26, 2008

With the invitations scored and folded a little part of one edge had to be trimmed off. A simple yet very time consuming task. Since I had the cutter out I figured I might as well cut all the guides for the photo slider.

The guides are just slips of paper which will be folded around the photo sliders so that the sliders don’t get stuck on the tape holding everything together. It worked well on the mock-up invitation so I think it’s necessary.

I did notice one problem with the tape. In the mock-up, which was on your run-of-the-mill printer paper, the tape held fine. However, on the heavier card stock it doesn’t work as well and the invitations start to pull apart. I decided that some rubber cement would do the trick. I ran to the store, got the rubber cement and put a few invitations together. It works pretty well.

The issue with the rubber cement is the size of the brush in the thing. It’s massive. So on my way home from work today (Saturday) I picked up a small, stiff bristle paint brush. Yes… it’s work perfectly.

I managed to finish about half of the invitations tonight before I ran out of double sides tape. Now you may be asking, “Dan, I thought you weren’t using the double sided tape?” Well I am. It works well to hold the photo slider guides to the inside of the invitation. Sort of keeps it in place to make assembly a whole lot easier.

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll make a quick morning trip to the store, get some more tape and then finish up everything up.

Left to do:

  1. RSVP cards
  2. Direct sheets
  3. Weight everything at the post office and get correct postage
  4. Mail out the invitations

Invitations - Assembly: Phase 2 and 3

Invitations are coming along pretty well but not as quickly as I thought they would. Granted I knew they would be a lot of work but since Monday I’ve been coming home from work and starting on them – and not finishing until late.

I’ve not scored and folded all the invitations. The photo sliders have been cut and I assembled one invitation to take to work. A few people there were asking about them and wanted to see the finished product.

Hopefully by the weekend I’ll have them done.

Invitations - Assembly: Phase 1

Posted by: Dan on Apr 21, 2008

Tonight was a busy night for me. I printed off 125 invitations (double sided). I also managed to cut two holes in each invitation for the photo slider that will go in them. This wasn’t difficult, it was just time consuming. I started at 4:45PM and managed to finish up around 10:15PM. Right now I think things are going pretty well – despite a few minor set backs.

When printing the invites the heavier weight of the paper caused everything to be a little off center. All this means is once everything is assembled I’ll have to trim a little off on side of the invitation. Not a huge deal, but still some extra work. The other minor set back – my lack of planning for the holes. I borrowed a hole punch but it didn’t reach in as far as I needed it to. So I ended up cutting all the holes with a razor blade knife. My hands are sore.

Tomorrow night I will hopefully get all the photo sliders printed and cut. I’ll try to score the paper for the folds (I have to do this because of the heavy paper weight). If time permits I can try to get the photo slider “guides” cut as well. Wednesday night I hope to assemble everything.

So yeah, there you have it. A lot of work for something that I hope turns out well.

Invitations printed and cut

Lots and Lots of Images

Posted by: Dan on Mar 15, 2008

Brooke’s friend Amy is working on a project for Brooke and I that required me to put together a CD of images. So I had to go through all my images to look for pictures of Brooke and myself… and there are a lot of images.

I started on this a while back but that was on my old computer which would crash and restart about every 30 minutes. Plus it was slow. So finding images was a major chore. Not so with the new computer. Last night I went through the remaining images (nearly half of all the images) in about an hour. Nice!

The images have been burned to disc and are all set for Brooke to hand over to Amy when she sees her tomorrow. That’s one more thing to cross off the “to-do list”.

Invitations - 2nd Round of Mock Ups

Posted by: Dan on Jan 10, 2008

I spent a good portion of the night working on mocking up the invitations. It went pretty fast simply because I had made a template a few weeks back. The only thing I really had to do was adjust a few sizes – picture window, the tab and the text.

However this time I printed the invitations out on some card stock that Brooke brought over for me. I’m actually pretty happy with them right now and I think in the long run they’ll look good.

The one issue I’m having is with this image slider – for lack of the proper name. I’m using double sided tape to hold one of the folds (it’s a tri-fold invite) down. In between two of the sections goes a little strip of paper with two images on it. When you pull this down it works fine. However, when you try to slide it back up it can catch on the tape.

I think I have a work around for that but I’m going to have to play around a bit and see if it’ll work. I really hope it does because the more I work on the invites the more I like them.
